As all of us continue to figure out our new normal, we at Team Engine like to read up on how others are adapting. This week we found an Ohio plant that leaned on their strong values for teamwork and flexibility to create new jobs despite the pandemic, a welding company that changed its company culture, an entrepreneur working on technology to bring blue-collar workers back-to-work safely, and a man who is busting the myths around blue-collar jobs. 

Ohio Plant Adapts During Pandemic to Create Jobs

In the “new normal,” the Paulding team which normally creates high-impact thermoplastic polymer nimbly shifted to producing plexiglass, which is used for sneeze guards and other clear protective barriers. They were quick to adapt during the pandemic, and with their new switch were able to hire over 20 new full-time employees and are looking to hire 20 more. Gary Buckland, Senior Plant Manager, says, "to survive and thrive in a crisis, sometimes you have to think outside the box."

Injecting Youth, Changing a Culture in Welding

AMECO USA, a custom fabricator in Ohio, had a solid workforce in place, but its existing hiring process wasn’t drawing in the type of new employee the company wanted: they needed motivated individuals who had high expectations and were willing to work hard and be a part of a team. The welding skill was important, but the personality traits were paramount. By changing its interview process and placing an emphasis on character, work ethic, and teamwork in addition to welding and fabricating ability, the company found a new generation of workers who could help propel it forward.
